IS MARXIAN CLASS PHENOTYPIC?

WITH AND AGAINST MARX

As the epidemic of midwits and cynics bombastically prattling on about the existential threat of "communism" and "Marxism" continue to spread like wildfire (if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor), it seemed like a fine time to administer to such clowns a figurative thumb in the eye (as I agitate the out-of-control metaphor mélange yet further). Here I consider what remains of value in Marxism -- even if I feel the need to recontextualize some of it.

In the hope of inspiring some other readers to take out a paid membership, and support the scholarly work I do here, I'm sending out this audio as a free sample to all subscribers. If you'd like to support what I do here, taking out a paid subscription would be a great way to help insure that I can continue with this work. But if that's just not in your budget, that's cool: I hope you enjoy the audio post. And of course much more brilliant, penetrating analysis like this coming soon exclusively for paid subscribers!

NB: Whoops. The way I do these audios is I come up with a handful of ideas I want to weave together and then just go at it. But of course there’s the danger of forgetting one of the points. (Write them down? Oh, come now.) So, one of the points I’d intended to emphasize toward the end was that while Marx himself promoted some notion of communism (not particularly anything like the USSR or PRC), from a Marxist class analysis perspective, Marx was an avatar, theorist, and prophet of the managerial revolution more broadly. And thus we see in his radical “environmentalism” the underpinning assumption about the merits and virtue of the social engineering and bureaucratic paternalism ethos which characterizes managerial class regimes in general, as well as of course our own manifestation in managerial liberalism. And that, of course, helps contribute to the confusion that leads so many to buy into the new red-baiters (who are clandestine apologists for liberalism). So, just imagine I said all that at the end.
